The Fraunhofer IPT - a profile

The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT develops system solutions for the networked, adaptive production of sustainable and resource-efficient products and the associated services. Our focus is on process technology, production machines, production quality and metrology, and technology management, and ranges from the fundamentals to the digital transformation of production.

We develop and optimize new and existing methods, technologies and processes for the production of the future. We understand production not only in its individual steps, but in the totality of all processes and interconnections between the elements of the process chain. In this way, we develop both highly specialized individual technologies and complete system solutions for sustainable production on behalf of our customers.

Our objective: climate-friendly and sustainable production

New demands from the capital markets require companies to rethink productivity: moving away from a purely financial approach to a broader view of the sustainability of processes and products. More efficient manufacturing processes and energy-saving machinery and equipment can help to reduce the overall cost of production. They create flexibility and resilience for companies and protect the climate and nature. However, products are only environmentally friendly as a result if they cause as few harmful emissions and waste as possible not only during production, but also while in use and at the end of their service life.

With around 480 employees, the Fraunhofer IPT is working to make production processes, systems and products more climate-friendly and ecological: On behalf of our customers and project partners, who set out with us on the path to more sustainable and resource-conserving production.

The directorship of the Fraunhofer IPT lies in the hands in the hands of our four professors. Together they form the board of directors of the Fraunhofer IPT and the WZL of the RWTH Aachen University.
