Growing volumes of data pose challenges for production and at the same time enable new approaches to solutions

The "Leistungszentrum – Networked, Adaptive Production" pursues the goal of making value chains for the manufacture of technical and biological products significantly more flexible and efficient by networking and digitizing all hardware and software systems involved and the product itself.

Increasing flexibility and efficiency of complex value-added networks

The vision of self-optimizing and adaptable production is being researched across disciplines and demonstrated on the basis of selected pilot lines. A systematic, holistic approach to the identification, recording, processing and utilization of data in the production of complex products will be considered. Seven fields of competence are addressed: sensor systems & data acquisition, data synchronization & middleware, digital twin in the product life cycle, interfaces & connectivity, data analytics & data modeling, cloud systems & IT architecture and innovative business models.

Big Data Analytics as the key to data-driven process optimization

Within the "Leistungszentrum", the Fraunhofer IPT is, among other things, responsible for the analysis of large amounts of data, which are included in the pilot lines ("Big Data Analytics"). This includes the following activities in particular:

Training of product- and process-related models with the help of machine learning methods
Determining data quality and improving the quality of production-related data
Development of a roadmap for the application of AI and ML, taking into account the boundary and framework conditions for industrial use

The research project will further develop the Automated Machine Learning concept in production ("AutoML"), especially for the preparation of the data and the training of the models.

Opportunities for participation/ cooperation

In order to further deepen the knowledge gained at the Center of Excellence in Aachen and to bring it closer to the industry, the International Center vor Networked, Adaptive Production (ICNAP) was founded. The core of the Center is its community, which forms a network and a platform to further develop, transport and publish research results, demonstrators and visions of the Center of Excellence.
