Manufacturing eco-friendly products

New materials and valuable resources determine production

Climate and environmental protection demand a fundamental rethinking of the way we deal with many products, but also with every-day routines: Purchasing behavior, energy consumption and mobility habits affect all citizens and will have to change significantly in the coming years in order to meet climate targets and ensure an environment worth living in for decades to come.

For the development of new products, this means specifically addressing new materials and scarce raw materials. After all, both during the service life of products and at the end of their period of use, the aim is to reduce emissions and recycle as much as possible in the interests of a functioning circular economy.

Future technologies for ecological progress

In order to reduce global CO2 and other climate-damaging emissions as quickly as possible, we are focusing on the use of future technologies such as batteries and fuel cells in mobility, transportation and traffic. At the Fraunhofer IPT we are looking for substitutes for problematic materials and hybrid materials and are developing practicable solutions for recycling - so that technological progress increasingly also means ecological progress.

For what lasts long is really good

Resource preservation over the entire product life cycle - and beyond - must be taken into account as early as the product development stage. We consider both the application and the further recycling of materials, components and systems in terms of a functioning circular economy.

Resource efficiency in the application

To ensure that products last as long as possible and also save valuable resources during use, materials, components and technical systems must be continuously improved. Environmentally friendly technologies become affordable through cost-effective series production, optimized designs. Hybrid components save resources in use, and integrated sensor technology helps monitor energy consumption or wear in daily use.

Recovery, recycling and repair

Focus on the future: Even at the product development stage, it is now essential to think about the recovery, recycling and reuse of the valuable materials used. For complex products made from precious raw materials or materials that are difficult to recycle, this is a particular challenge that we include in our considerations at an early stage.
