Material processing with high-pressure water jet: resource and material-saving cutting, drilling and removal of high-performance materials

Conventional processes are difficult to machine high-performance materials such as nickel-based alloys, titanium aluminides, CFRP and technical ceramics. In addition, the tools used wear quickly and are expensive. Machining with high-pressure water jets is a material- and resource-saving alternative.

Water jet machining is suitable for numerous materials and applications. Furthermore, it is a cost-effective machining method, as only low tool and manufacturing costs are incurred and there is hardly any material waste due to the narrow cutting gap. The material is also protected in comparison to other manufacturing methods, as the component does not suffer any thermal damage during waterjet machining.

We are continuing to develop water jet cutting as well as water jet ablation. Within the framework of publicly funded research projects and bilateral industrial projects, we offer our know-how and support in these areas to corporate partners.

Electro erosive machining (EDM and ECM)

Electrochemical metalworking (ECM), like electro-erosive processes of spark erosion (Electro Discharge Machining - EDM), has continuously gained in importance in recent years, especially in engine and tool construction. In both processes, the material can be machined regardless of its strength, and component geometries can be manufactured with high precision. Thanks to the greater flexibility of the machines used, EDM and ECM can be attractive alternatives to conventional machining processes for the manufacture of even highly complex components.

We develop new approaches for different applications with the aim of minimizing edge zone damage, increasing component service life and at the same time producing cost-effectively. Within the framework of publicly funded research projects and bilateral industrial projects, we offer our know-how and support in these areas to corporate partners.
