Research project "VibroCool"

Vibration assisted drilling of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) and FRP metal stacks using special cooling and lubrication strategies

Composite structures are highly appealing to lightweight applications due to the combination of outstanding material properties and low mass. Therefore, the future demand for high-performance composite structures will increase significantly throughout all knowledge-based European industrial sectors.

However, the currently applied manufacturing methods need to be substantially improved in order to increase cost-effectiveness of those materials. This also applies for the final machining in particular for drilling of aerospace components.

To increase the cutting performance for drilling of FRP and FRP metal stacks, a new drilling system/process will be developed and optimized in the VibroCool project. This system will combine vibration assisted drilling with the application of internal cryogenic cooling and optimally designed polycrystalline diamond drills. Following a modular approach, the elements will eventually be integrated into the VibroCool technology platform.

Within the VibroCool project, a multidisciplinary consortium consisting of one research institute, five manufacturers of key technologies and one end user are cooperating together.

This collaborative project is funded by different national agencies within the ERANET-MANUNET network.
