Error-free and efficient processes are an important component for the competitiveness of manufacturing companies. Many manufacturing companies have therefore already implemented methods and tools for quality management or have even developed and set up their own quality management systems in recent years. The recording and analysis of data has always been a central element of quality management, as statements about the quality of products and processes can be made on the basis of the data and subsequent statistical evaluations.
The digitization and networking of production increases the availability of such data from systems, processes and products along the entire product life cycle and thus also changes the role of quality management in the company: The focus of data analysis is shifting from a reactive and corrective function to a predictive one that enables proactive action. While this means that the principles of quality management remain in place, the actors involved need new tools, for example from the domain of machine learning, in order to be able to deal with the changed complexity. These tools offer a great opportunity for quality management. At the same time, however, there is also the danger that companies, which are not using these modern tools and do not adapt their quality management systems, will lose competitiveness.
The Fraunhofer IPT supports companies in the implementation of data-driven quality management.
