Five steps to 5G

The new 5G mobile communications technology offers enormous potential for production with low latencies and high data rates: processes can be continuously monitored and reported and process sequences can be adaptively designed in real time. The intelligent interaction of the 5G network with local edge-cloud systems enables scalable implementation of end-to-end real-time applications - from the sensor to the cloud.

The Fraunhofer IPT tests with the almost one square kilometer long 5G research infrastructure, the 5G-Industry Campus Europe in Aachen, a total of eight application scenarios - from 5G sensor technology for monitoring and controlling highly complex manufacturing processes to mobile robotics and logistics to cross-location production chains.

In five modules, we show you how 5G technology can be used to make the transition to digitalization in production a success and what potential and challenges the implementation of 5G holds.

5G as future communication standard for production

To realize the vision of a highly flexible and networked manufacturing system, individual processes and distributed systems must be able to communicate reliably in real time, without delay. This is the only way to ensure a high degree of monitoring and control and to be able to react dynamically to the smallest changes in the production process.

Communication systems are the basis of the factory of the future: The new mobile communication technology 5G offers the best conditions for this purpose: High data rates (up to 10 Gbit/s) and density as well as low latencies (>1ms) are a basic requirement for modern production systems. Networks, adaptive production systems, real-time image processing and autonomous robots are no longer just a vision, but could soon be part of everyday life in modern production.


5G-Application profiles

Depending on the area of application, the 5G network can be optimized with regard to various properties:

eMBB (Enhanced Mobile Broadband)

The Enhanced Mobile Broadband enables extremely high data rates of up to 10 Gb/s uplink and 20 Gb/s downlink and supports services with high broadband requirements. Possible applications are:

  • Augmented Reality
  • Virtual Reality
  • Real-time image processing


uRLLC (Ultra Reliable and Low Latency Communications)

Ultra-reliable and low-latency communications can be used optimally for time-critical applications and the requirements for availability with a transmission reliability of 99.999% and short response times of less than 1 ms. Possible areas of application are:

  • Autonomous driving
  • Edge Computing
  • Process control

mMTC (Massive Machine Type Communications)

By means of massive machine-type communication, a high number of devices per unit area can be supported, thus ensuring high energy efficiency. Possible applications are:

  • Smart Cities
  • Logistics
  • Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
  • Machine to machine communication

5G-Industry Campus Europe

Since 12 May 2020, the 5G-network has been in live operation on the 5G-Industry Campus Europe. With an area of almost 1km², 19 antennas and a bandwidth of 10 Gb/s, it is the largest industrial 5G research network in Europe.


In order to test and further research sensor cloud systems in industry, the Fraunhofer IPT and seven other industrial partners are developing a modularly expandable sensor cloud system for existing machines in the "5GSensPRO" project.



The objective of 5G-SMART is to demonstrate, evaluate and validate 5G technology for new manufacturing applications in industrial environments.
