One of the major trends in the automotive industry is thus the sustainable reduction of energy consumption. One of the best ways of attaining this goal is to manufacture structural and body parts from lighter materials or to utilize weight-optimized hybrid-material structures.

The use of fiber-reinforced plastics in the mass production of automobiles remains some way off, even today. The reasons for this are varied and range from immature basic technologies to gaps in the automation of established manufacturing processes.
