MM Live UK 2011: Street lighting with LED – Fraunhofer IPT develops new injection compression mould for polymer optics

Light-emitting diodes, known as LED, are the energy-saving illuminants for the future. The use in street lamps significantly lowers the energy consumption. On MM Live UK in Birmingham the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT presents a new injection compression mould to produce polymer optics for homogeneous street lighting in Hall 3A, Booth B41.

Polymer optics for energy efficient lighting

In contrast to a light bulb a LED emits light from a very small and well defined area. Thereby it is possible to distribute the light very well with suitable optics. Street lamps using LED need optics with a special lens design to homogenise the light distribution. Fraunhofer IPT has developed an injection compression mould to replicate such optics in plastics aiming for an optimised optical performance. Integrated stamp dies enable a high-precision moulding of the polymer optics and also allow for the reduction of cycle time and thereby costs.
