Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology
Being successful in the field of production technology requires the ability to overcome one’s limitations and the willingness to react fast and flexibly in the face of sudden changes. The competencies of our four departments, the Fraunhofer CMI and our partner institute, the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering WZL of the RWTH Aachen are focused in our business units. enable us to solve interdisciplinary problems which reach beyond the boundaries of our departments’ workscope.

Life Science Engineering
"Life Science Engineering" is a business unit covered by the Fraunhofer CMI in Boston and the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen.
Turbomachines
The demand for more efficient aircraft engines with lower emissions is on the increase. Improved efficiency and reduced emissions in turn are highly dependent on the right choice of material properties and component design. We optimize conventional manufacturing technologies and develop new solutions with which to integrate a variety of turbine and engine building technologies either simultaneously or in series into the production process.
Optics and optical systems
Our "Optics and optical systems" business unit deals with the design and manufacture of complex high-end optics and the assembly of optical systems. Our specialists from the fields of process technology, machine development and metrology can provide professional support for your projects – from the original idea to the finished product.
Precision and micro technology
This center was established with funding from the Land North Rhine-Westphalia as a platform for the provision of current information on the topic of precision and micro-technology.
aachener werkzeug- und formenbau (awf)
The aachener werkzeug- und formenbau, a joint business unit combining the tool-making expertise of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering WZL of the RWTH Aachen and the Fraunhofer IPT, provides companies, suppliers and customers of the tool and die making industry with comprehensive technological solutions that will help them to successfully master a wide range of challenges.
Lightweight production technology
The objective of our new business unit "Lightweight Production Technology" is the enabling of large scale production systems to allow an affordable manufacturing of efficient and environmentally friendly lightweight components. For this purpose we develop and plan innovative manufacturing technologies and systems for industrial use.
